Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (29 September 1547 – 23 April 1616) was a Spanish writer.His most famous book was Don Quijote de la Mancha.It is considered the first modern novel, and therefore Cervantes was the first novelist. The book has been published in 65 countries. The work is considered among the most important in all of literature.

Miguel de Cervantes, novelist, playwright, and poet, the creator of Don Quixote and the most important and celebrated figure in Spanish literature. His novel Don Quixote has been translated, in full or in part, into more than 60 languages. Learn more about Cervantes in this article. The English writer Ford Madox Ford stated in The March of Literature (1938) that Cervantes did with his book to the world a disservice: "The gentle ideal of chivalry is the one mediaeval trait which, had it survived as an influence, might have saved our unfortunate civilization." The method by which Cervantes won the ear of the Spanish people ought, mutatis mutandis, to be equally effective with the great majority of English readers. At any rate, even if there are readers to whom it is a matter of indifference, fidelity to the method is as much a part of the translator’s duty as fidelity to the matter. Cervantes was known for his bravery, and he suffered crippling injuries, maiming his left hand along with two chest wounds.
